“Dr. Queen” is another work from Toni Rubio’s “Doctors” series in which the versatile character “Dr.” takes center stage. In this piece, “Dr.” adopts the figure of Queen Elizabeth, using her image to issue a strong critique of the homophobia and racism historically associated with the English monarchy. This piece also extends its critique to contemporary followers of the monarchy, who, despite being aware of these issues, often choose to ignore them. Through this work, Rubio invites reflection on the uncritical acceptance of figures of power and to question established historical narratives.
